Youth Ministry Assessment Report (October 24, 2010)
Building on the Foundation: Youth
Ministry at First Pres
"For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid;
that foundation is Jesus Christ." (1 Corinthians 3:11)
An Integrated Approach to Youth Ministry
The goal of our ministry is to make disciples of Jesus Christ-disciples who
are fully integrated into the worship, fellowship, and mission life of our
church. We seek to incorporate youth into all of our church's ministries, so
that both youth and adults experience personal and spiritual growth
alongside people of all ages as well as in their own peer group.
Youth in Worship
Youth read the first scripture lesson each Sunday at the 8:55 a.m. worship
service, and they also participate as Communion servers. Youth also share
their gifts in worship through music and drama. Each year in the spring,
youth lead all aspects of two worship services on Youth Sunday.
Sunday Morning Discipleship
Regular Sunday morning classes for youth meet from 10:05-11:05 a.m. Youth in
grades 10-12 meet in the Senior High Room. Ninth graders meet in the
Carriage House. Youth in grades 7-8 meet in the Fellowship Hall and then
proceed to their rotation workshop room of the day.
Sunday Evening Senior High Youth Fellowship
On most Sunday evenings from 5:00-7:00 pm, our senior high youth gather for
fun & games, dinner, and a time of fellowship and spiritual formation. A
typical evening starts at 5:00 pm with games in the Senior High Room (or
outside on the lawn if weather permits), moves on to dinner at 5:45 pm, and
concludes with fellowship and discussion from 6:15-7:00 pm. Contact Kim
Wells for a detailed schedule.
Confirmation Class
Our 9th graders spend the whole year together on Sunday mornings in our
Confirmation Class, which ends in May each year with a Service of
Confirmation in Sunday worship. Each Sunday, the class worships together at
the 8:55 worship service and then meets for another hour in the Carriage
House. In the fall, the Confirmation Class experiences an "Urban Plunge"
mission weekend in D.C., and in the spring, they enjoy a spiritual retreat
at Camp Hanover. The 2011-2012 Confirmation Class will include both 8th and
9th graders, and beginning in 2012-2013, Confirmation will move to 8th
grade.
Service Projects & Mission
Approximately once a month, our senior high youth are invited to participate
in a service project. Projects have included painting and landscaping at
local Habitat for Humanity homes and preparing for upcoming youth mission
trips. During the summer, there are opportunities for youth to participate
in week-long mission trips.
